Beyond Easy Cleaning: What Baby Gear Brands Should Look for in Upholstery Materials

When selecting upholstery materials for strollers and child car seats, easy cleaning is often one of the first requirements. It is easy to understand why: milk, snacks, sunscreen, sweat and everyday spills are all part of life with young children.
But cleanability is only one part of the decision.
The right upholstery material must also support comfort, durability, chemical safety and long-term appearance. For baby gear brands and product designers, these qualities should be considered together—not evaluated separately.
1. Skin-Friendly Comfort
Children may remain in a stroller or child car seat for extended periods, so every touchpoint matters. Materials used on bumper bars, harness pads, seat inserts and side panels should feel soft and comfortable against delicate skin.
A suitable surface should also remain flexible when wrapped around curved or padded components. If a material is too rigid, it may create wrinkles or an uneven finish during upholstery. If it stretches excessively, it may lose its shape over time.
